This workshop explains how note-taking is used within an ILP (ICONIX Learning Pods) homeschool and why understanding comes before writing.

In ILP pedagogy, notes are not the primary goal — conceptual understanding is. In this session, we focus on how we ensure comprehension and meaning are established first, and then show how note-taking is used to support that understanding rather than replace it.

We’ll walk through how imagery is intentionally built into notes to strengthen memory, organization, and recall. To keep things practical and accessible, we’ll go over a few simple examples that show what this looks like at different stages.

The workshop also covers:

• When note-taking is helpful and when it is not

• How over-reliance on notes can interfere with learning

• How imagery-based notes unlock long-term retention

Finally, we explain the multi-step process that moves learners from receptive understanding (recognizing and comprehending information) to expressive mastery (explaining, applying, and communicating ideas clearly).

The goal is to help families understand how note-taking fits into learning after meaning is established, and how to use it intentionally to support mastery rather than overwhelm.
